Karlsruhe Institute of Technology
Science and Engineering have a long tradition in Karlsruhe. The technical University of Karlsruhe has been founded in 1825 and is the very place at which Heinrich Hertz discovered the electromagnetic waves.
The Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (Research Center) has been founded in 1956 for the development of nuclear power for civil usage. Most recently, both institutions have merged and have become KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) establishing an institution with approx. 20000 students and more than 5000 researchers. The main areas of research comprise energy and micro and nano scale science and technology.
